Sheffield Hallam University Offers £500,000 Scholarships to Refugee Students

Since the invasion of Russia in the Ukraine things have become very terrible for the regional and international students who were studying there. While the war was happening in Ukraine many students managed to escape from that country after countless efforts. Though luckily students managed to save their lives due to this, their education took a standby and also affected their mental health. To make things easier various UK universities came forward to help the refugee students by offering them an opportunity to study in their university whilst aiding them with funds, scholarships and other facilities as and when required according to the situation. Recently, Sheffield Hallam University also partnered with Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design to support Ukrainian students for their education for a longer-term whilst building up teaching infrastructure, student & staff mobility & research collaborations for the Ukrainian universities.

Knowledge Hour: The University’s Refugee Rights Hub was introduced in 2018 and has now supported more than 150 families globally in making applications for connecting with their loved ones in the UK. It’s a part of the ‘Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice’ and specializes in offering free legal advice to the refugees alongside helping them reunite with their family members.

One such name which is effectively contributing to helping refugee students is the ‘Sheffield Hallam University’ who’s also honored with the title of the ‘University of Sanctuary’ for its generous effort toward the refugee students. The refugee students not only hail from Ukraine but other countries too and to help them Sheffield HallamUniversity  has pledged to support them by providing scholarships and bursaries worth £5,00,000 approximately for 3 years. Through this initiative, the university is willing to offer ‘Sanctuary Scholarships’ to those talented students who have gone to asylum in the UK. The perks of the scholarship include a 100% tuition fee waiver & additional financial support to cover all their expenses during their educational journey. Apart from this, the funding will also be utilized for offering bursaries to the PhD researchers at the university as per the commitment done to the Council for Risk Academics (CARA) respectively.

About this initiative, Krassimira Teneva (Head of International Experience ~ Sheffield Hallam University) stated that she’s extremely delighted that the university has taken a step forward to help the students who had sought help from the asylum in the UK and is establishing its identity with a welcoming and inclusive nature in the ‘Sheffield City’ which is known as the ‘Original City of Sanctuary’ and is highly well-known for changing the lives of the students. According to her, these sanctuary scholarships tend to modify the lives of students by letting them access beneficial sources of education whilst recognizing incredible stability & courage during certain circumstances which change their entire life. She also stated that the university has been always at the forefront of helping refugee students and will continue to welcome them in this diversified community for supporting their educational needs as it’s the core motto on which Sheffield Hallam has pledged to work on eternally.

Being named as ‘University of Sanctuary’ out of 24 universities seems to be a proud moment for Sheffield Hallam University and hence they have strongly committed to helping & supporting all the refugee students for completing their education & research studies. To celebrate the contribution put forward by the refugees & asylum seekers towards Sheffield Hallam a special event named ‘Refugee Week 2022’ was held on 24th June at the ‘Hallam Square’ where Syrian businesswomen were the key speakers for this day. The event was conducted to showcase versatile facilities provided by the ‘University’s Refugee Rights Hub’ to the refugee and the asylum seekers at the university.
