University of Southampton takes a New Initiative to help Old Age People

As discussed in some of our articles, we have already stated that helping & volunteering for others is a part of life and that’s how you learn to lead a positive life. Comforting others whether it’s a kid, adult or old age will make you understand the prominent importance of kindness & generosity in the society. More or less it’s always good to help others irrespective of caste, religion, color, age, gender, etc.

Apart from NGOs & local people, there are various educational institutions too who have taken forward this initiative of helping others and of those one such university is the University of Southampton which has recently introduced a new initiative for helping the old age people in their community. For this, they have partnered with a charity organization from their university ,i.e., (Southampton Living Well) so that all the basic facilities are also provided to the elderly people with ease. With this new drive the ‘University of Southampton’ & ‘Southampton Living Well are looking forward to promoting the feeling of wellbeing and mental health amongst the old age people.

After the outbreak of the global pandemic, people have been stuck in their homes and since most of the time is spent indoors hence it has taken a toll on their mental health so to eliminate such negative outcomes these two parties have opted for this approach to help the old age people with a series of sports activities, physical exercises, other extracurricular activities & much more. Few popular activities which were organized by the Occupational Therapy Students & Southampton Living Well (SLW) under this drive were sowing seeds & the flower pot decorating activities which eventually brought a bright smile on the face of elderly people. All the occupational students were really happy to see that this campaign is bringing back the feeling of warmth, happiness and positivity in the lives of elderly people.

In this context, Emily Edwards (Occupational Therapy Student) stated that as a student it’s a good feeling to see when everyone takes part in the activity. All the elderly people showed a constant engaging spirit and enjoyed taking part in seed planting & plant decorating fun games through the activity session. Along with her 5 teammates, she had conducted these two activity sessions for the elderly people where everyone seemed to share a healthy laugh over common jokes and talking throughout the entire session.

About this initiative, Alison Fisher who works as Day Opportunity Manager at the Southampton Living Well said that she was extremely delighted on knowing that the group of 6 occupational therapy students wanted to meet elderly people & make them take part in fun activities with a wish of making their life a bit more cheerful & brighter. To make this drive a success, all the students interacted with the people from the elderly community first and then after knowing their interests organized eco-friendly activity sessions for them.
