University of Nottingham conducts PhEAST Research trial To make life easy for stroke survivors

This research study is a random steady trial and is named PhEAST (Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation for Acute Stroke Dysphagia Trial) by the lead author of this research ,i.e, Professor Philip Bath who works at the “Strokes Trial Unit” located in the School of Medicine of the University of Nottingham. This research study is funded by NIHR HTA (Health Technology Assessment) Programme which is a unique health assessment programme known for funding research projects which are related to medicinal treatments, clinical analysis & other essential health-related parameters.
Working on such a research study was highly needed because at times due to stroke, patients find it difficult to swallow and in some cases, its aftermaths are very severe where a patient suffers from abnormal swallowing even after a year. Such patients use long-term feeding tubes which reduces the life rate of humans and takes a bad toll on their physical, mental and emotional health. To avoid such mishaps the PhEAST research team of Nottingham came forward with the idea of helping stroke patients so that they can swallow again being comfortable.
Talking about this research work, Professor Philip Baith stated that it’s seen that these days the human population mostly suffer from swallowing issues which are caused by an uncommon stroke and to date no significant treatment/cure has been invented to unravel this situation. He further stated that he always aimed to discover a helpful treatment method for curing the swallowing problem and that’s when he realised that something different needs to be worked upon for finding a permanent solution.For him starting this project trial: PhEAST (Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation for Acute Stroke Dysphagia Trial) is a very delightful moment and he along with his team members is going to work very hard on this research study to deliver the final output where it will be proven that “Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation” could easily resolve the swallowing issue caused after strokes in the humans. From his viewpoint, the outcome of this research study will benefit millions of people in NHS (National Health Service) who are suffering from this disease.
For practical analysis of this trial, the researchers will use ‘Nasogastric Tubes’ which are embedded with tiny electrodes. The main purpose of these electrodes is to transmit low bursts of current to the nerves in the backside of the neck via a direct form which would lead to stimulation of the nerves post which the patient would be capable of swallowing their food easily. This happens because when the nerves stimulate the electric current modifies the swallowing centers located in the brain area without any sense of stimulation being barely felt.
Approximately, 800 candidates will be appointed all across the UK, Denmark, Germany & Austria for this impressive research work. Though the first participant has already been chosen by the University of Nottingham Hospitals NHS Trust by the research panel. The trial process will commence in November 2024 and will end in February 2025. Once the person is done with the trial then he/she needs to undergo a follow-up performed by the healthcare professionals for 3 months. This will be done so to observe the individuals and to check whether their ability to swallow again after stroke has been improvised post undergoing the Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation for Acute Stroke Dysphagia Trial at the NHS hospital.
