University of St Andrews Formally Introduces its First Female Black Rector Since 1858

Apart from gaining the glorious recognition this year ‘University of St Andrews’ has also welcomed their First Female Black Rector (Dr Leyla Hussein) on 15th April 2022 wholeheartedly at the university. Dr Leyla was elected in November 2020 for a three-year timeline. She’s the 54th Rector appointed by the university management but the First Black Female Rector who’s a Physiotherapist, Campaigner & Global Leader of Gender Equality & has been selected as St Andrew’s 2022 Rector recently. To welcome her, there was an official ceremony held on 14th April 2022, where students led her on a tour of local hostels along with a procession through a decent community & disciplined pier walk.
On this day, Dr Leyla Hussein (First Female Black Rector ~ University of St Andrews) stated that it’s already been two years as the rector at the University of St Andrews & the journey has been truly productive, energetic & knowledgeable for her. Sharing her feelings about the ceremony she also acknowledged that she’s extremely honoured on being greeted formally by the university along with actively participating in the ‘Rector’s Drag’ stories tradition. In addition, she also contended that it’s an honour for her to highlight student voices at the highest university level which ultimately is counted as an unforgettable moment for the university. For her, being Rector at the University of St Andrews is all about supporting students with their educational needs & taking bold steps to fulfil those educational needs through student advocacy. She’s been extremely vocal about this responsibility & has been helping the students with full sincerity, commitment & dedication for the last 2 years & has promised to do the same further. In the end, she said that she’s aware of all the students who are looking for support, accessibility & inclusivity from the university & she genuinely respects their contributions towards St Andrews for which she’ll make sure that those students receive full support from her & university in the final year of her ‘RectorShip’ role too.
Students from the University of St Andrews have been choosing their Rector since 1858 but it’s the first time that they have chosen a female as their rector. Apart from Dr Leyla Hussein; Monty Python (Founding Member~John Cheese), Catherine Stihler MEP & JM Barrie & Ruthard Kipling are other notable professionals who were selected as rectors at St Andrew’s in the previous years. Rectors appointed at the University of St Andrews hold two roles,i.e, Pastoral Role (Informal) apart from being the ‘President of the University Court’ (Formal~ Highest Governing Body of the University).
In this context, Lottie Doherty ( President ~ University of St Andrews Student Association ) stated that it’s a different rector welcoming ceremony for Dr Leyla Hussein & as she’s already completed 2 years as a rector. It was double celebration time for her & entire university fraternity as apart from welcoming Dr Leyla celebrated her election win too which couldn’t happen in 2022. Since 2022, she’s been amazing & has helped the students always & now everyone is looking forward to what she’ll do for St Andrews Student Community in the final year of her RectorShip.
