University of Sheffield students pay tribute to Nobel Prize Winner via Chemistry Workshop
Studying the subject “Chemistry” is way too much fun as there are lots of experiments involved in & it comes with its own set of benefits and aftermaths. The trials & outcomes have been highly beneficial at times and for delivering such fantastic results all those researchers have been honored with Nobel Prizes for their research in the chemistry department.
One such famous personality was Sir Harry Kroto (76) who passed away in 2016 due to major complications in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He had pursued his undergraduate (UG) & Doctoral (PhD) degree from the University of Sheffield. While studying here he worked on multiple types of case studies in the chemistry division for which he was honored with the Nobel Prize in 1996 for his effective contribution to this highly innovative field. Though he worked on numerous research projects the one in which he was given the Nobel Prize was relevant to the Buckminsterfullerene. He’s the main man behind the discovery of the “Buckminsterfullerene” (Buckyballs) which was the rarest form of carbon found back then shaped just like a football. The carbon fullerene molecules which constitute these buckyballs were made up of hexagon & pentagon shapes respectively.
To honor his work achievements & remember him with a good perception the University of Sheffield organized a hands-on chemistry workshop entitled “Annual Sir Harry Kroto Buckyball Workshop ” where students and faculties talked about how brilliantly Sir Harry Kroto discovered buckyballs. As it was held in memory of Sir Harry Kroto the management made sure that students understood the concept of the buckyballs invention. In this workshop, students made slime moulds and bath bombs reminiscing Sir Harry Kroto throughout the chemistry workshop session.
For this workshop, 7 students who had studied at Forge Valley and Chaucer School in Sheffield city back during their schooling days were welcomed by the university. All of them were given a special kit curated specifically for the workshop so that they can learn more about the buckyballs and their physical and chemical properties very precisely. Apart from this students also got to see various other chemistry models such as flash freezing, iodine clock reaction ( chemical solution getting equipped in between two varied colors) & distribution of daily use essentials due to nitrogen gas. All of these models were found to be indeed informative by the students.
On the other hand, Ella Rose Twyman who was a member of the workshop organizing committee at the university stated that Sir Harry Kroto used to organize multiple buckyball workshops for the students worldwide during his research days & introduced them to the highlighting aspects of the scientific world. He also used to visit the University of Sheffield every year and conducted a buckyball workshop regularly. Thus continuing the same momentum the university has been organizing this workshop for keeping his invention and learning alive. According to her, all of this was also done to encourage the students to make a career in the STEM field as it offers spectacular career opportunities to the students allowing them to explore the in-depth areas of science whilst making new inventions. The students also got to interact with the current undergraduate (UG) students who were pursuing science & engineering at the university and understood the benefit of studying here during the same time.
